Game One Box Game Two Box
HAMBURG, NY – Rachel Collier {photo} had 5 hits and finished with 2 RBIs for Hilbert College in their split decision today against Mount Aloysius College in an AMCC softball double header. Mount Aloysius reached for four home runs, which resulted in eight runs, in the opening game en route to their 18-5 win. Hilbert jumped to an early lead and held on for a 7-4 night cap win. Hilbert improved to 4-10 while the Mounties fell to 6-6 in league play.
Prior to the first pitch, the softball team honored seniors Olivia Battle, Rebecca Elensky, Amber Grosch, Devan Jonathan and Katie Pettis for their contributions over the years to the Hawks.
In the second game, Collier’s single in the bottom of the first inning knocked in the Hawks’ first run and lead of the day. After Pettis reached first base due to an Altoona error, Collier crossed home extending the lead to 2-0. Hilbert padded three more runs in the bottom of the third inning while holding the Mounties scoreless. The excitement that inning occured when Jaelyn Gotham hit a 2-run double, giving Hilbert a 5-0 hold. Aloysius responded with a mini-rally scoring four runs off 4 hits to cut the difference to one run. Hilbert held defensively and dumped two more runs on in the bottom of the sixth while shutting the Mounties out for the 7-4 victory.
Gotham went the distance in the circle and struck out one while giving up 10 hits.
Mount Aloysius earned their first home run on the day when their third batter connected on a Devan Jonathan toss in the first inning of the morning game. Hilbert wasn’t able to put a rally together until the bottom of the fourth inning, but by then it was too late. The Mounties hit three more homers in the top of the fourth and, even with the Hawks five runs in the bottom, Altoona was up 15-5. The visitors extended their lead and won in five innings.
Jonathan opened the game, carried the Hawks through three innings before Natalie Whitman finished in the circle. Each pitcher gave up nine runs and struck out two batters each.
Hilbert is scheduled to play at the Northtown Center Wednesday, April 24 against D’Youville College.
