HAMBURG, NY – Hilbert College wasn’t able to hold their lead in either of the AMCC base games today and dropped a 12-8 and 16-9 double header to D’Youville College. In both games, D’Youville rallied in the top of the seventh inning to improve to 5-7 AMCC, and 7-15 overall.
Prior to the night cap, seniors Chris Hoak, Ryan Ilardi and Garrett Pauly were honored for their years of service to the baseball program.
Hilbert opened the day with a 2-1 lead after three innings. D’Youville scored three quick runs in the top of the fourth and added one run the next two innings, while Hilbert progressively added runs those three innings to take a 8-6 lead into the top of the seventh inning. Three different Spartans hit doubles to push runners around the bags and pad their score by six runs. The Hawks finished the bottom of the inning with a single, a walk and three outs.
Cody Ashford, Paul Wujek and Justin Hulbert each finished with 2 hits and Garrett Pauly earned a double bagger. Tyler Shaw led the Hawks with 3 RBI.
In the nightcap, D’Youville jumped out to an 8-1 lead after two innings. Hilbert stormed back and Joe Pernick hit the team’s first home run this year in the 4th. The Hawks added eight more runs by the bottom of the fourth to take a 9-8 lead. Neither team made it home in the 5th, but D’Youville snuck one more run on the board in the sixth to force a tie, 9-9. Brent Gibbs hit a three-run home run along with two other team mates striking for doubles to pad 7 runs to D’Youville’s total. Hilbert came up empty in the bottom of the seventh falling 16-9.
Pernick and Tom Irish finished with three hits and Pernick led with 3 RBIs.
The Hawks have a few days off before they travel to Cazenovia College April 26th for a non-conference double header beginning at 2pm.
