CAZENOVIA, NY – Rebounding from a 21-7 opening loss, the Hilbert College baseball team came up with a six-run top of the seventh inning barrage to earn a 7-5 night-cap victory against Cazenovia College April 25th. Hilbert improved to 3-26 overall after the non-conference set of games while they hold a 2-14 AMCC record.
Freshman Mark Anderson had a career day against the Wildcats finishing with three hits and two doubles as the Hawks designated hitter.Cody Ashford, John Babosci and Chris Hoak added three hits while Joe Pernick knocked in three runs. Babosci, Ashford and Pernick matched Ryan Ilardi with two runs scored each.
Justin Hulbert carried the Hawks through 5.1 innings, before Cartaginese faced one batter who hit into a double-play in the bottom of the sixth.
Down 5-1 to start the 7th, Hilbert’s rally started with a Tyler Shaw single. Anderson got a base-hit and the first run crossed the plate off a pass ball with Ashford at the plate. Ashford’s single sent the second run home and two more runs were added when Pernick reached first base on an error. Babosci’s late-game double sent two more tallies home giving Hilbert their first lead of the day.
Pauly took the mound in the bottom of the seventh and faced four batters to earn the save.
Cazenovia jumped to a 6-1 lead after three innings before Hilbert cut it to 6-5 by the middle of the fourth. While the Hawks mustered only two more runs in the top of the fifth, the Wildcats piled on 15 runs in the middle of the game.
Pauly connected for his double in the third inning and Hoak hit his in the Hawks four-run fourth inning. Anderson’s entered the late in the game and made it to second base in the seventh inning. Tyler Roth tossed 7 hits and four strike outs in 3.2 innings of work.
Hilbert completes their season with one last home game April 30th against Fredonia State (2pm DH) and a road game against Keuka College May 2.
