UTICA, N.Y. –SUNYIT blanked Hilbert College in a non-conference opening game for the Hawks August 31. After Montaleza Diego scored his third goal of the game, he became SUNYIT’s all-time career goal scorer with the Wildcats. With the 3-0 victory SUNYIT moved to 1-0-1.
The Hawks played even with the hosts in the first half, getting five shots and two corner kick attempts on offense. But the Wildcats dominated the second period outshooting Hilbert 14-0, even though all the scoring was completed by the 33rd minute of the game. Ten different SUNYIT players ripped shots on Hilbert’s net, with Diego leading the charge making 50% of his attempts. Five Hawks were able to get shots off, but none did any damage.
Freshman Brandon Henry (Olcott, NY/Newfane) finished the game making four saves in the 45:56 minutes of play for Hilbert. Senior Jeremy Kraska (Elma, NY/Iroquois) earned the start, but rotated out of the game just before intermission after giving up all three scores between the 24th and 33rd minutes.
Hilbert has to wait until September 7th for their next game which happens to also be their home-opener against Grove City at 1pm.
Please note, the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference alternates on a yearly basis between the women’s and men’s programs as to who plays the first game of a conference double-header. In 2013-14, the men’s teams will play the opening game. Hilbert will maintain that same playing order with non-conference double-header contests as well.
