Men's Soccer Struggled in Soaking Rain

Sep 07, 2013

Box Score

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Both teams contained their frustration with the wet field and soaking rain during the last 80 minutes of the men’s soccer game September 7. Grove City College, still searching for their first win after three earlier tries, pushed the tempo early and jumped to a 2-0 half time lead. Hilbert responded at 66:02 with their first score of the season, but the Wolverines continued to pace the game en route to a 6-1 victory.

The game opened with Grove City earning three corner kicks within the game’s first 100 seconds.   At 19:46, Jordan Carmichael took a pass from Seth Loew for a 1-0 lead. The Wolverines hit again at 30:02 and rode to a two-goal lead.

After a five-minute half time, both teams took the field hoping to outplay the rain. The visitors scored again at 48:29 and continued to push, attempting three more corner kicks before they were awarded a penalty kick at 55:42, which Loew converted.

Hilbert found its rhythm offensively beginning at 61:50, taking four corner kicks, getting three shots off and finally being rewarded with a sophomore Jon Davison’s goal (assisted by Yonis Osman) in photo above.

After that score, Grove City continued to challenge Hilbert with fresh bodies, inserting a substitution every three to four minutes which cut down on the Hawks offensive output.

For the game, Grove City outshot the Hawks (26-11) and attempted nine more corner kicks (15-6).

Freshman Henry Brandon was credited with five saves for Hilbert.

The Hawks will travel to Alfred University for another non-conference game on September 10 ( 7 pm start).
