Box Score
HAMBURG, N.Y. – Alfred University squeaked out of western New York with a 2-0 victory over Hilbert College in women’s soccer September 7. After playing to a 1-0 half time score on a soggy field, Hilbert turned up their effort and improved their passing, but Alfred (1-3) added a cushion goal early in the second half to hold on for the win.
Both teams took a wet field still taking on rain water through the first 30 minutes of the game. Jasmine Ramon earned her first tally of the season when she took the game ball, which took a funny bounce, to the top of the box and chipped a shot up over sophomore Erin Smith in goal at 6:32. Alfred went to half time holding a 10-8 advantage in shots but both teams were even in corners (3).
After a brief intermission, Hilbert took the field and outplayed the Saxons. Hilbert pushed their energy level to a higher level and outshot Alfred 14-5 over the next 45 minutes forcing Samijo Scheer into nine second half saves. Unfortunately for Hilbert, the wet ball kicked by Nicole Lobur slide through Smith’s hands and made its way into the net.
Up next - Hilbert (0-2) will host a 4pm game against Cazenovia College on September 10.
