ROCHESTER, N.Y. – After a long and competitive weekend of volleyball, Hilbert College returns to Hamburg with a 1-3 record at the Golden Flyers Invitational hosted by Nazareth College. The Hawks played two games each day with two of the four games going to five sets. Hilbert grabbed a five-set victory over RIT but surrendered to Geneseo, Nazareth and Hartwick bringing home an overall record of 2-5.
Senior Chelsea Reischuck averaged 2.06 kills per set after collecting a team-high 35 kills. Freshman Amanda Binder finished with the best hitting percentage (2.13) adding 32 kills. Senior Shannon Memminger continues in her role of quarterback tallying 117 of the team’s 128 assists. Junior Jordan Botsford earned team-high 41 digs and was helped by sophomore Allegra Johnson who added 38 digs and team-high six blocks.
The Hawks averaged 8.65 kills per set and 12 digs per set. Hilbert’s opponents finished with 9.18 kills and 10.71 digs per set.
In Friday’s rematch against Geneseo, Hilbert surrendered a 25-23, 25-16, 25-17 match. Binder led with 11 kills and 10 digs.
The first night ended with a 17-25, 17-25, 27-25, 25-22, 15-8 come-back victory over RIT. Johnson led with 10 kills, 14 digs and three blocks.
When facing the hosts Saturday morning, Hilbert wasn’t able to pull out the upset win over Nazareth, going down 25-18, 18-25, 25-11, 25-12. Memminger set for 21 assists, and Botsford hit double-digit digs with 10. Junior Kayla Lewis reached for seven kills.
Hilbert faced Hartwick College in pool play as the tourney wrapped up Saturday afternoon. Hartwick opened with a 25-14 victory, before Hilbert jumped back in the lead with 25-23, 25-18 wins. The Hartwick Hawks gained the momentum back and took a 25-20 and 15-9, fifth set victory.
Hilbert will travel to North Buffalo September 11 for a non-conference match at Medaille College beginning at 7p. Then coming up next weekend, the Hawks will host Houghton College (10a) and Alfred University (2p) in the teams first tri-match of the season.
