HAMBURG, N.Y. – Freshman Chelsea Olson broke the scoring draught for the Hilbert College women’s soccer team when her shot in the 77th minute beat Cazenovia’s Breanne Warner for the game winner on September 10th. The Hawks improved to 1-2 and evened the Wildcats to 2-2 in the non-conference game on a very hot and humid afternoon.
With the score knotted at 0-0 after forty-five minutes, players were starting to feel the effect of the unusual heat and temperature swing from just three days ago. Hilbert outshot Cazenovia 17-4 by the break, which both teams took in the shade. Sarah Schmidt’s crossbar block was the Hawks closest shot to net in the 33rd minute.
The Hawks had multiple chances to score early in the second half, but to only find the same top crossbar serving as another defender. Freshman Jackie Morgan’s ball touched frame twice before Olson’s shot hit back of the net for the win.
Hilbert outshot Cazenovia 33-11 with a third of the Hawks shots coming from Morgan’s foot (10). Freshman Courtney Vaccaro fired seven shots, just two ahead of Schmidt. Hilbert earned six corner kicks, with five of them coming in the second half when the Hawks showed they wanted to win the game and not settle for a tie.
Sophomore Erin Smith earned her first shutout of the season making 10 saves. Warner was busy in net for Cazenovia as she was credited with 16 saves of the 17 shots on goal while her teammates helped the cause blocking five more shots.
With the win, Hilbert can carry this momentum into their weekend game at Hiram on September 14 - 1pm first kick.
