HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College announces its sixth annual Hilbert Reads event featuring a presentation by author Gulwali Passarlay on Tuesday, October 16 at 7 p.m. in Hilbert’s Swan Auditorium.
Every year, the Hilbert College Reads committee selects a text and invites the author to present on campus. This year’s selected book is The Lightless Sky by Passarlay. This event is open to the local community.
In The Lightless Sky, Passarlay recalls his remarkable experience and offers a firsthand look at one of the most pressing issues of our time: the modern refugee crisis—the worst displacement of millions of men, women, and children in generations. Few, like Passarlay, make it to a country that offers the chance of freedom and opportunity. A celebration of courage and determination, The Lightless Sky is a poignant account of an exceptional human being who is today an ardent advocate of democracy—and a reminder of our responsibilities to those caught in terrifying and often deadly circumstances beyond their control.
The Hilbert College Reads program is a common intellectual reading experience that engages students and creates a sense of community through cross-disciplinary conversations. All incoming freshmen were given a copy of the selected text.
Gulwali Passarlay is scheduled to speak on October 16, 2018 at 7 p.m. in Swan Auditorium on the Hilbert College Campus. Open to the public.
