Express Take It to Hawks

HAMBURG, NY – The Hilbert College women’s basketball team opened the 2012 season with a 58-45 defeat to Wells College November 15. Ashley Roser led the Express with 16 points and pulled down 26 rebounds and swatted six blocks while Hilbert’s Natalie Whitman finished 12 points and six rebounds.
Both teams came out slow in the first half with Wells holding a 22 -18 lead at half time. Hilbert turned up the offense after intermission scoring 27 second -half points, but they struggled to find the bottom of the net. They finished the game shooting 21% from the floor while Wells turned in a 35% field goal performance. Hilbert committed fewer turnovers than the Express (16-31), but with 56 missed Hilbert shots Wells was able to out rebound the Hawks 64-40, grabbing 46 defensive boards.
Sarah Lorusso dished four assists and had seven steals, capping her eight point, five rebound performance.
Holli Erkson’s 15 points (nine rebounds) and Cassie Smythe (10 points) were the other big guns for the Express as they open their year 1-0.
Hilbert (0-1) travels to Penn State Dubois November 17 with a 1pm tip-off. They return home to Hamburg November 20 squaring off against Cazenovia in a double header with both men’s teams before all squads break for Thanksgiving.
