Redhawks Take Two from Hilbert

Hamburg, NY : Despite a late comeback surge in game one, the Hilbert baseball team fell short to La Roche College on Saturday, April 24, 6-4. Dave Cunningham (Cheektowaga, NY/ Maryvale) went 2-for-4, scoring two of Hilbert’s four runs while fellow senior Matt Begeal (Northville, NY/ Wells) went a perfect 2-for-2 scoring one run of his own for the Hawks. Hilbert would suffer their second loss of the day as the Redhawks would use their bats to overpower Hilbert for a 13-3 win.

In game one both teams made a strong defensive stand as the game remained scoreless through three innings of action. Single runs would be traded in the fourth inning as Begeal would score the lone run for Hilbert for the 1-1 tie after four.
 
La Roche found their offensive flow in the fifth as five runs would cross home plate. George Nahay would be responsible for four of those runs after a grand slam to give the Redhawks a 6-1 lead.
 
Hilbert would chip away at the deficit and score three runs in the remaining innings, but the five runs in the fifth would be good enough to lift La Roche past Hilbert in game one 6-4.
 
In game two, Hilbert struggled to find offensive momentum. Chris Hoak (Hamburg, NY/ St. Francis) {pictured left} would hit his first home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring two runs. The late home run was not enough as the Hawks would fall 13-3.
 
Jim Rubino led La Roche in game two as the second baseman went a perfect 5-for-5 scoring three runs and earning four RBI. Rubino also hit two home runs in the victory.
 
The Hawks will face AMCC opponent, Medaille College, on Tuesday, April 27. The game is set for 1 p.m. on Hilbert's home diamond.
