HAMBURG, N.Y. -- Susan Viscomi, who has more than 30 years experience in intercollegiate athletics, has been named Hilbert College’s director of athletics, announced President Cynthia Zane, Ed.D. With this appointment, Viscomi is the first woman named to the position in the college’s 53-year history. Her appointment is effective July 1.
“The strength of the candidate pool made this a challenging decision,” said Zane. “Susan’s depth of experience in successful NCAA Division III athletic programs distinguished her from other talented candidates and she emerged in the search process as the ideal individual to take on this leadership role. I look forward to working with her and I’m confident, under her direction, there will be positive changes made in the athletics program.”
As Hilbert’s athletics director, Viscomi will oversee the college’s 12 NCAA Division III men’s and women’s sports teams and provide administrative direction for the athletics program.
"I’m honored to be named Hilbert’s athletics director and excited about the opportunity to work with the college’s dedicated administration, staff and student-athletes in moving the program into a new era of excellence,” said Viscomi. “With the strong spirit and tradition that exists in Hilbert athletics, it’s my goal to provide the leadership and enthusiasm that will build a program students, alumni and supporters can take pride in as we work toward creating future successes and improving the overall experience for student-athletes."
Viscomi brings to Hilbert three decades of combined experience as an administrator, coach and teacher. Most recently, she served as associate athletic director at Hamilton College, where she had oversight of 28 intercollegiate programs, as well as intramurals and clubs. In addition to her associate director duties, she was a professor of physical education and senior woman administrator. During her tenure at Hamilton, she also worked in other capacities that included interim director of athletics and chairperson of physical education and had a three-year stint as head women’s soccer coach.
Prior to this, Viscomi was head women’s soccer coach at SUNY Oswego for seven years, during which she was twice named State University of New York Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Her other collegiate experience includes serving at SUNY Plattsburgh as assistant professor of physical education, head women’s soccer coach and assistant coach of men’s and women’s track and field.
On the national level, Viscomi has been involved in a number of NCAA efforts. She’s currently a member of the NCAA Championship Committee and liaison to men’s and women’s track and field and ice hockey, and is past chair of the NCAA’s Women’s Soccer National Committee.
Among her contributions at the conference level she’s been administrative liaison to the New England Small College Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Coaches and NESCAC’s Women’s Ice Hockey and Softball Coaches.
A native of Ellisburg, N.Y., Viscomi received a master’s degree in counseling from Colgate University and a bachelor’s degree in physical education from SUNY Cortland.
Kara Rehbaum, Hilbert’s assistant athletics director, will serve as interim director until Viscomi assumes the post as of July.
