Baker Leads Hawks In Defeat

HAMBURG, NY – The final game of the inaugural men’s lacrosse season came to a crushing finish in a 27-16 loss to Medaille College April 27. The Hawks could not recover from a 11-0 deficit after the first 15 minutes of play. Josh Baker (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) led the Hawks with 6 goals and Sean Purtill (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) finished with team high six assists. John Jewett (Gowanda, NY/Gowanda) was on both ends, scoring two goals and assisting on three more. Hilbert finishes the season at 6-6 while Medaille improves to 5-9.

Medaille opened the game up 60 seconds into the period and continued to score every minute or so building the large 11-0 lead after one quarter. Medaille’s Tyler Strassburg scored four of his game high 7 goals and assisted on two more in the first quarter before the sky’s opened up and the wind blew through the south towns. Hilbert’s Baker scored all six of his goals in the second half with a majority of them netting in the 4th quarter when the hard rain hit.
Ryan Wagner (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius), the #1 leader in Goals Per Game (3.91 in Div III) finished the day with 2 goals and 1 assist while Brock Levick ranked #2 (3.85 in Div III) contributed 6 goals and 2 assists. Wagner finished the game matching his Div III average (#5 – 10.45) with 11 ground balls but his normal success rate of winning face-offs was challenged against the Mavericks (14-29).
The Mavericks outshot the Hawks (59-38), had more ground balls (43-36) and out worked Hilbert slightly on the face-offs (26-22) to gain their 1st win over Hilbert this season.
