HAMBURG, NY – After a slow start, Hilbert College snagged a 59-48 non-conference win over the visiting College of New Rochelle January 22. The Hawks had four players reach double figure scoring with Tiana Cheasman's 13 points, nine steals and four assists leading the charge. Alyssa Pechin led the Blue Angels with 18 points going 8 for 10 from the foul line. Hilbert improves to 3-14 overall while the College of New Rochelle drops to 4-10 after suffering two back-to-back road loses over the weekend.
Both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net early in the game. Hilbert held a five point lead at 7:36 before the Hawks went on a 10-0 run to build a 31-16 advantage. Cheasman scored six points and swiped two steals in the run giving the Hawks confidence going to the locker room holding a 38-18 lead. Hilbert shot forty-five percent from the floor while defensively holding New Rochelle to fourteen percent field goal shooting and forcing 23 turnovers.
After the break, both teams were more aggressive and the tides turned. The visitors connected on forty-two percent of their shots and limited Hilbert to just nineteen percent shooting. With the change in momentum, Hilbert had to dig in and play defense since their shots weren’t falling. They controlled the boards in the second period, after being out-rebounding the first half. Hilbert finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds and by the final horn were credited with 15 steals, 12 assists and held a 47-42 rebounding advantage.
The Hawks have a few days off before they host Penn State Behrend (8-2) January 25 at 8 pm in the Hafner Recreation Center.
