ALTOONA, PA – Freshman Jordan Lynch put the Hawks on the score board just before half time, but Hilbert College found themselves down by two goals by the 61st minute and didn’t recover, dropping 3-1, to Penn State Altoona in the first round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play-offs October 27. Hilbert finished the season 7-9-1 overall (5-4 AMCC) after the loss while Altoona continues on into the AMCC semi-finals against the top seeded Penn State Behrend October 31. Mike Robinson and Stephan Karl each earned three points in the Lions (9-7, 6-3) victory.
Robinson took a long pass and chipped the Wilson ball over Hilbert’s keeper, Paul Liedkie, giving the home team their first lead of the game at 10:56. Then a short seven minutes later, Robinson riffled a pass high into the box which Karl Stephan headed to the back of the net extending the lead. In the thirty-eighth minute, Hilbert’s Lynch notched the Hawks’ only score cutting the deficit before half time. Each team opened the second half with three shots on frame before Nick Holland’s final goal at 61:10 sealed the deal for Altoona. Hilbert continued to push for scores, firing five more attempts at net, but all came up empty.
Liedkie was credited with six saves for Hilbert who was outshot 19-13 by Altoona. Lynch (two shots on goal) combined with Ed Minkel, Mario Williams and Ryan Leljedal for the Hawks five shots on frame.
The 2012 men’s soccer team completed the season setting several Single Season records and pushed several players into the Top 10 Individual Career records. The most important single season record was the Hawks seven overall wins, five of which were against their AMCC rivals which qualified the program for their first post-season tournament.
