HAMBURG, NY – The men’s volleyball team hosted a tri-match on January 10 to kick off their 2010 season. College Saint-Jean-sir-Richelieu and Medaille College joined the Hawks for the Sunday afternoon affair.
The first game of the morning pitted Hilbert against College Saint-Jean-sir-Richelieu (Quebec, Canada). The Giants won the 3-game match (30-25, 30-19, 30-21). Junior Dan Wolfe (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) lead the Hawks with 15 kills and 39 digs while junior RJ Sykora (Stow, OH/Stow-Munroe Falls) contributed 11 kills and 26 digs. Sophomore setter Vince Amico (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-Saint Jude) earned 32 assists.
The middle game found a hard fought match between College Saint-Jean-sir-Richelieu and Medaille College. The local team earned the 3-set victory over the visitors from Quebec (30-28,30-22, 30-15).
The night cap found Medaille to be too much for the Hawks. Game scores were 30-16, 30-13, 30-20 in favor of the Mavericks, giving them a non-conference victory over the Hawks. Once again, Wolfe led the teams in digs with 39 and Sykora had 8 kills to pair with his 27 digs. Little Amico passed for 20 assists on top of his 2 solo blocks.
Hilbert starts the year off 0-1 after today’s matches. They will wait until January 22 for their next game which happens to be home against Pfeiffer College (North Carolina) with a start time of 8 pm.
