BETHANY, WV – The Hilbert women’s soccer teamplayed back to back games over the weekend and came away with a few great individual performances along with 3 points in conference standings. On Saturday afternoon, the Hawks hosted AMCC opponent UP Greensburg and handled them easily with a 7-0 victory. Alyssa Hulbert (Tonawanda, NY/Tonawanda) scored a hat-trick and had an assist in the team’s offensive attack. On Sunday, September 20th, the team shifted gears and became a defensive-minded squad to earn a 0-0 tie in double overtime.

The star for Sunday’s game at Bethany is Mary Zinni, Hilbert’s main goal keeper this season. The Batavia High School product has started and played every minute of the season and certainly earned her team’s respect on Sunday in the 110 minute shoot-out with Bethany. Zinni (Batavia, NY) faced 31 shots – 16 of them on target. Of Zinni’s 16 saves, 4 were grabbed in the overtime periods securing the tie.
Hilbert’s best scoring opportunity occurred within the last seconds of the 2nd half when Hulbert had a breakaway ball one on one with Bethany’s goalie, Brittany Saddler. Hulbert’s shot soared wide right of the net setting up the double overtime play.
Coach James Ruggiero felt that ‘Sunday’s game was one of the gutsiest performances I’ve seen from my team. To play back to back matches and to compete against a team (Bethany) who had more legs than we did and for us to stick with it was great. We played excellent defense today and even though they had a ton of shots, none really tested Mary.”
The Hawks head to Thiel College for a double header soccer game with the men’s team on Thursday, September 24th and also on Saturday, September 26th for another double header at AMCC-foe Franciscan University of Steubenville, OH. Their next home game is schedule for Wednesday, September 30th at 4 pm against first-year AMCC opponent D’Youville College.
