HAMBURG, NY – The Hilbert women’s basketball season officially opened up Sunday, November 15 when they hosted Nazareth College in a non-conference game. The experienced Flyers came to town and beat the young Hawks 77-21. Hilbert opens the season with a 0-1 overall record while Nazareth earns their first victory.

Hilbert had nine players getting 10 minutes or more of experience on the court while all thirteen dressed players contributed. The Hawks were led offensively by freshman Molly Burgess (Lyndonville, NY/Lyndonville) with 8 points on 2-6 shooting (2-4 from behind the arc) and 2-2 from the foul line. Another freshman guard Shavonne Walton (Lackawanna, NY/Lackawanna) contributed 5 points while freshman forward Jasmine Moore (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) added 4 points. Sophomore Mary Zinni (Batavia, NY/Batavia) led the team in minutes played with 36.
Nazareth College was led by senior Kylie Bartlett with 11 points and 3 steals. 12 players contributed in the scoring column and 8 players stole at least one ball from the Hawks.
“We weren’t aggressive enough and we need to do a better job of rebounding and taking care of ball while on offense,” said Hilbert head coach Matt Phifer. The Hawks shot 15% from floor and were out rebounded 56-35.   The score at half time was 39-14, but Hilbert came out cold in the second half shooting 2-22 and scoring 7 points in the last 20 minutes.
On Tuesday, November 17, the Hawks travel to Rochester Institute of Technology for a 6 pm tip-off. Later in the week, Hilbert will travel to Pittsburgh, PA to compete at the Chatham University Tournament on Friday and Saturday, November 20 /21. The Hawks don’t return home until Saturday, November 28 when they host Alfred University.
