FREDONIA, NY – Senior Aaron Lawrence was the lead-runner for the Hilbert College men’s cross country team when they captured sixth place in the Fredonia Invitational September 10. Fredonia took the men’s championship in the six-team invitational event with their team low score of 28. Mercyhurst captured the women’s event with a 26 score; Hilbert women were listed as ‘Incomplete’ indicating the Hawks did not have a complete roster of five runners to compete and/or finish the race.
Fredonia’s top five runners placed between first and ninth place and 14 of the top 27 racers were Blue Devils. Fredonia’s Peter Francia finished the 8K race in 26:27 followed by Keven Gregg from Mercyhurst in 26:40. Besides Lawrence (37:55), Hilbert’s other runners were Matt Hunt (39:48), Pat Lagueras (40:17), Andrew Niedzielsky (47:59), Steven Crane (60:42) and Paul Coleman (who did not finish the race due to knee soreness).
Mercyhurst’s Emily Francis finished the women’s 5K race in 19:49 followed by Amanda Solly (19:55) and Amanda Cochiaarra (20:13), both from Fredonia. Mercyhurst’s top five runners were also in the top nine slots on the women’s side which helped them to score so low. Hilbert’s first-year runner Maria Linares finished her collegiate race in 27:24.
The Hawks compete next in the Behrend Invitational September 17, hosted by Penn State Behrend (Erie, PA). Both the men’s and women’s teams expect to be running at full strength by then.
