GREENVILLE, PA – Senior John Pingitore opened and closed Hilbert’s scoring while junior Sean Purtill jammed the middle portion of the stat-sheet in the Hawks 15-2 non-league victory over Thiel College March 20. Hilbert improved to 2-2 and dropped the hosts to a 2-4 overall record.
Besides getting the road win, the Hawks were happy to play inside the dome placed over the college’s football field. Pingitore and Purtill each netted 5 goals and added 1 assist while William Wagner finished with another stellar performance making 16 saves in goal.
Hilbert out-worked the Tomcats in ground balls (40-29) and had 9 fewer turnovers (26-17) as both teams struggled to judge the bounce of the ball off the frozen tundra. The Hawks were on the attack from the get-go, earning double-digit shots each period and finished with 16 more attempts than Thiel.
Pingitore and Thiel’s Tim O’Shea earned points in the first quarter. Hilbert watched Carmen Papa riffle one past Wagner for back to back man-up goals for Thiel as they held an early 2-1 advantage.
That was it for Thiel’s offense as Hilbert went on a 14-0 run over the last 11 minutes in the second quarter and the entire second half. Pingitore knotted the game at 11:16 off a Drew Ulbrich feed and less than one minute later, Purtill took a Lucas Cellino pass and turned it into the game-winning goal.
Kane added 3 assists to his 1 goal and Kyle Mackowiak’s 5 ground balls led 18 Hawks who were credited with hustling after and scooping up a ground ball.
Hilbert’s next game is against first-year Franciscan University March 24 in Steubenville, OH. The Hawks are scheduled to host their first home game Saturday, March 30 against Cobleskill in their first NEAC league game.
