HAMBURG, NY – The Hilbert College women’s volleyball team captured their first AMCC league game of the season with their 3-0 victory over La Roche College October 1. The Hawks finished with a perfect day shutting out (3-0) Alfred University in the night cap of the tri-match. Alfred and La Roche battled to a 3-1 middle match contest with Alfred coming out on top. Hilbert’s Chelsea Reischuck led the Hawks with 16 kills and 28 digs while Shannon Memminger passed for 40 assists for the day.
In the 11am match, Chelsea Reischuck earned 13 kills, 12 digs and 2 solo blocks (25-20, 25-9, 25-17). Reischuck had 6 kills in 7 attempts in the middle-set blowing away La Roche at the net. Jordan Botsford switched to the libero position in the third set, giving Kayla Lewis more playing time at the front line. That move worked well for the Hawks as Lewis finished with 5 kills in 11 attempts (.273%) and Botsford completed the match with a team and season high 22 digs. Shannon Memminger passed for 23 assists (4 aces) as Rachel Kwiatkowski finished with 2 solo blocks for the 1-3 AMCC Hawks.
La Roche was led by their quarterback Emily Foust with 13 assists many to Shawn Neiswonger (6 kills, 8 digs, 2 aces) and Shelby Weber (6 kills).
In the middle match, Alfred took the first two sets (25-21, 25-18) before La Roche captured the third set 26-24. Alfred settled back into their rhythm in the final set pulling out the 25-18 win. For the match, the Saxons dominated the net with 16 total blocks and hit for (.243%) while keeping play alive with 64 team digs. La Roche’s Neiswonger led the RedHawks with 15 kills again, but she was outdone by Alfred’s Paige Jensen who earned 16 kills (.375 hitting).
To close out the day’s contests, Hilbert claimed a 3-0 victory from Alfred for the second time this season. With the win, the Hawks improve to4-8, 1-3 and pick up back-to-back wins in a tri-match for the first time in many years. With four players finishing the Alfred match earning 4 kills or more, it is hard to say who led the squad to victory. The Hawks all were consistent in their hitting with only one player finishing in the negative.
Devan Jonathan finished with 6 kills, Rachel Kwiatkowski came up big with 4 kills (3 for 4 attempts in the 3rd set) with 15 digs, and Jordan Botsford with 4 kills and 12 digs. Chelsea Reischuck chipped in 3 kills and a team-high 16 digs while Shannon Memminger (4 kills) did her thing setting her team mates up with 17 assists.
The Hawks should carry this momentum into their next match at AMCC’s Penn State Behrend October 4.
