Student Counseling
College can be exciting, but also stressful at times. Counseling Services is here to support your mental health, personal growth, and overall wellbeing.
Hilbert Counseling Services provides a professional, confidential, and welcoming environment where every student’s concerns are treated with dignity and respect. Our goal is to support your personal wellbeing, growth and success during your time at Hilbert.
We offer individual counseling, group support, prevention and wellness programming, and referrals to community resources, depending on your needs. No concern is ever too big or too small.
Confidentiality is our highest priority. Conversations between counselor and student are strictly confidential. Information may not be released to any party, including parents, faculty, administration, or staff, without the student’s written consent, except in very specific exceptions.
There is no cost for counseling services, whether you live on campus or commute.
We provide:
- Confidential individual counseling
- Group support and workshops
- Wellness and prevention programs
- Referrals to community resources
Schedule A Counseling Appointment
Counseling sessions are by appointment only, scheduled on weekdays between the hours of 9:00 am and 4:00 pm. Please contact Counseling Services to make an appointment.
Why Students Come to Counseling
Students seek support for many different reasons. Talking with a counselor offers someone outside your immediate circle who can provide perspective and guidance and can help you:
- Reduce anxiety or stress about academics or daily life
- Adjust to the challenges of college and life transitions
- Work through family or relationship difficulties
- Cope with grief or loss or feelings of depression
- Address concerns with substance use or harmful habits
- Build skills for resilience, balance, and long-term success
Our Commitment to Wellness
In addition to one-on-one support, Hilbert’s Counseling and Health Services team promotes a holistic approach to wellness. We offer workshops, outreach programs, and educational resources on topics such as stress management, healthy relationships, mental health awareness, and substance-use prevention. Our aim is to give you tools that not only address immediate concerns but also support your long-term health and success as a student and beyond.
A wide range of wellness resources and self-help materials are available to all Hilbert students free of charge.
Counseling Services Staff
Brian Gangloff, LMHC
Director of Counseling and Health Services
Brian Gangloff is dedicated to supporting the wellbeing and success of Hilbert College students through compassionate care to address the whole person – mind, body and spirit. With experience in college counseling, mental health support, and wellness programming, Brian works to create a welcoming space where students can be heard, understood, and empowered.
At Hilbert, he oversees counseling and health services, coordinates outreach and wellness programs, and collaborates with faculty and staff to promote student success both inside and outside the classroom. His approach encourages students to not only address immediate concerns but also develop skills and strategies for resilience and long-term growth.
Brian was born and raised in Western New York. He is a graduate of Boston University where he studied Psychology and Biology. He earned his M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Medaille College in Buffalo. Brian has worked as a clinician in various settings for over 12 years including the Monsignor Carr Institute Children’s Clinic, Niagara University, and his private practice located in North Tonawanda.
Brian is an empathetic and client-centered mental health counselor with extensive experience supporting young adults through emotional, academic and life transitions. He is skilled in evidence-based practices including CBT, DBT, and mindfulness-based interventions. His therapeutic style involves being active as well as compassionate – a therapist willing to challenge and work together to uncover new ways of thinking, feeling, and living. He believes that when we take the first step towards facing our challenges, they become less scary and intimidating.
Outside of campus, Brian is passionate about our hometown teams and especially the Buffalo Bills. He believes it is hard to beat watching a baseball game outdoors in the summer with stadium food in hand. He enjoys shared interests with his wife and daughter that include zoos and aquariums, watching a movie (Disney princesses are a favorite at home), or exploring a new part of the country.
