Our conduct process is designed to help students navigate challenging situations through a restorative approach. This means we prioritize repairing harm caused by misconduct and promoting positive change within the college community.

Our dedicated staff works diligently to create a space where open dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution are encouraged. We uphold the Franciscan values of the college, which emphasize compassion, respect, and integrity.

Our conduct process is guided by the following principles:

  • Meaningful Dialogue: We encourage open discussion about college policies and how they impact the student community.
  • Truth-Seeking: Decisions are based on evidence and facts, not assumptions.
  • Clear Standards: Consistent and well-communicated community standards promote a safe and healthy learning environment.
  • Restorative Approach: We believe that wrongdoing primarily affects relationships, and we aim to repair those relationships through restorative practices.
  • Due Process: Every individual involved in a situation has the right to a fair process.

Hazing

Hazing is defined as an intentional, knowing, or reckless act, committed by one or more individuals against a student—regardless of that student’s willingness to participate—that occurs in connection with initiation into, affiliation with, or continued membership in a student organization. Such acts create or are likely to create a substantial risk, beyond what is typical in educational or athletic settings, of physical or psychological harm. Hazing is strictly prohibited at Hilbert College and may lead to disciplinary action, suspension, expulsion, or criminal prosecution under state and federal law. Read through our hazing policy (PDF).

Report a Hazing Incident

Summary of the National Study of Student Hazing (2008)

A 2008 National Study of Student Hazing found that 55% of college students in clubs, teams, or organizations experience hazing. Hazing goes beyond Greek life and athletics, often involving dangerous or illegal acts like alcohol use, humiliation, isolation, sleep deprivation, and sex acts.

Key findings include:

  • 25% of hazing occurred publicly, with coaches, advisors, or alumni aware.
  • Over half of incidents were posted online.
  • 95% of students who identified hazing didn’t report it.
  • 69% were aware of hazing in other groups.
  • 47% had been hazed before college.
  • Most students view hazing positively and don’t label their experiences as such.
  • Few recall meaningful prevention efforts beyond general statements that hazing is not tolerated.

Understanding Title IX

Title IX is a vital federal civil rights law that prohibits sex discrimination in all educational programs and activities receiving federal funding. This includes preventing and addressing sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking. At Hilbert College, we are committed to ensuring a safe and equitable environment for everyone. Our Sexual Misconduct Policy outlines our comprehensive approach to preventing and responding to these issues, providing information on how to report concerns and access support. Kara Rehbaum serves as Hilbert College’s Title IX Coordinator, acting as an educator, report taker, and facilitator to protect student rights and ensure our policies are upheld.

For detailed information on our policies and how to report a Title IX concern, please refer to our Sexual Misconduct Policy (PDF).
