Hilbert College will host a Celebration of Life service for Sister Edmunette Paczesny, FSSJ, former president and a transformative figure in the college’s history, on Saturday, April 11, at 9:30 am in Swan Auditorium.
The service is open to faculty, staff, students, alumni, former trustees, and members of the community.
Sister Edmunette served as president of Hilbert College for 32 years, leading the institution through a period of significant growth and transition. During her tenure, Hilbert evolved from a two-year college to a four-year institution, expanded its academic programs, and strengthened its Catholic Franciscan identity.
“Sister set a standard of commitment,” said Michael Cornell, Interim President of Hilbert College. “Hopes and dreams are free. Commitment is what makes them happen.”
Sister Edmunette is also credited with advancing programs in criminal justice and related fields, aligning them with Franciscan values of service and community impact. Her leadership contributed to major campus development, including academic facilities, student spaces, and residential growth that continue to support the college today.
Service Details
The Celebration of Life will be a formal prayer service honoring Sister Edmunette’s legacy through music, liturgy, and reflection. The program will include participation from members of the Hilbert community, the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph, and the Bishop of Buffalo, and will conclude with a collective expression of gratitude and recognition of her lasting impact.
Attendees
Bishop Fisher will be joined by community leaders and longtime supporters of the college. Governor Kathy Hochul will be represented through a written statement delivered by a Western New York representative, recognizing Sister Edmunette’s impact across the region.
