Emergency Blue Light phone at Hilbert College campus.

Campus Safety

Our Campus Safety provides a security and safety service to the campus community that offers around-the-clock patrol. They are responsible for enforcement of college rules, regulations and policies.

Hilbert Campus Safety provides a security and safety program that offers around-the-clock patrol and services to the campus community. Campus Safety is responsible for enforcement of college rules, regulations and policies. Violations of law are reported to the Town of Hamburg Police Department for action or other appropriate local, state or federal authorities.

The duties of campus safety meet the specialized needs of the college, including:

  • Preventative patrol of grounds and buildings
  • Emergency first aid and assistance
  • Parking and traffic management
  • Crime prevention
  • Incident investigation and reporting
  • Enforcement of college policies (including those related to alcohol and drug use and weapons possession)
  • Special services, like safety seminars and escort services

Your safety is our concern. The Hilbert Office of Campus Safety works hard to ensure the campus is a safe place to learn, live and work. With the combined efforts and cooperation of the entire Hilbert community, we can continue to make the college secure and one of the safest campuses in the area.

Hilbert College is located in Hamburg, NY, a suburb of the city of Buffalo, NY. With the advantages of a major city only ten to fifteen minutes away, Hilbert  is the ideal place to study and live in a safe, small and caring environment.

In addition to 24 hour per day security, Hilbert employs a Residence Life Coordinator and Assistant Director of Residence Life who both live on campus in student housing.

Emergency Phones

Emergency phones are located throughout the Hilbert campus. Emergency phones are connected directly to Hilbert Campus Safety. In addition to reporting an emergency, the phones may be used to request a safety escort or report a crime or suspicious activity. Simply pick up a phone and it will automatically dial a campus safety officer.

Red phones are at these locations:

  • Bogel Hall
    • first floor - across from the student lounge
    • second floor hallway
  • Lower Level Campus Center
  • Hafner Recreation Center Training Room
  • Maintenance Building
  • Paczesny Hall
    • Next to elevator 1st floor
    • 2nd floor
  • Swan Auditorium
    • Main hallway

Emergency Blue Light phones are located in outdoor locations in the following areas:

  • In front of the Hafner Recreation Center
  • One behind SR Katherine House
  • One behind Leo House
  • One in front of Trinity Hall

Our Mission

Our mission is to protect the campus community to ensure a safe environment in which to live and learn - one that's located in a safe, suburban area. Taking personal safety steps as well as reporting suspicious activities are some of the best ways you can help us to continue providing a secure campus environment.

Campus Safety vehicle

Campus Safety is staffed by a Director, Assistant Director, Full-time, and Part-time Campus Safety Officers who are licensed by New York State and have first aid/CPR and AED (automated external defibrillator) training. Officers also receive training in other areas throughout the year. Campus Safety Officers are not Police or Peace Officers, and rely on the Town of Hamburg Police Department to perform any arrests on campus, if necessary. You will see officers patrolling the campus by marked patrol car, golf cart, bicycle, or on foot 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Expand all Collapse all
  • Is the campus really safe?

Yes, particularly when you compare Hilbert's crime rate to other colleges of a similar size, our crime rate is very low. Campus safety and the Town of Hamburg Police Department work closely in providing a safe environment for all students, faculty and staff. You can do your part by being cautious, observant and willing to report suspicious or criminal activities.
  • What is the most prevalent crime on campus?

The most prevalent crime is theft of unattended property.
  • Are emergency phones available on campus?

Yes.  Red emergency phones are located in several campus buildings, giving you direct access to campus safety. Red phones are located in Bogel Hall on second floor hallway, and Paczesny Hall, next to elevator on 1st floor and on 2nd floor. Red phones are also located in the Athletic Training Room in Hafner Recreation Center, in the Lower Level Campus Center, Swan Auditorium in the main hallway, and in the Maintenance Building.  Blue light phones are located in outdoor locations in front of the Hafner Recreation Center, in Resident Lots A and B, and in front of Trinity Hall.
  • What if I have a problem or feel threatened?

Immediately call campus safety at (716) 479-1233 or use an emergency phone.
  • Is the campus patrolled?

Campus safety patrols the campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Are campus crime statistics available?

In accordance with the Student Right-to-Know Act of 1990, Hilbert must provide information related to crime statistics and security measures to members of the campus community. The latest statistics are available online.
  • Where can visitors park?

Visitors can park in Lot D located between McGrath Library and the maintenance building, Lot C next to Hafner Recreation Center, Lot G behind Swan Auditorium, or Lot E between the library and Franciscan Hall. Overnight guests in the residence hall/apartments may use Lots A and B but must obtain an overnight guest pass from the residence hall director or Campus Safety.
  • If no one is using the handicapped parking space and I can't find an open space near my building, may I park in that space?

Handicapped parking spaces are for handicapped individuals who have an approved parking permit to use these designated areas. Parking in these spaces without the proper permit will result in a parking violation and fine.

  • What if I bring a vehicle that does not have a registered parking permit to campus?

Come to campus safety to obtain a parking permit as soon as possible.
  • May I have two vehicles on campus?

Due to a limited number of parking spots, you are not allowed to have more than one registered vehicle on campus. College employees may register more than one vehicle but only one may be on campus at a time.
  • How do I recover my vehicle if it's towed?

Contact campus safety at (716) 479-1233 or stop by the office in the campus center to find out where your vehicle has been towed. You will be responsible for the cost of towing and any storage cost.
  • If my assigned lot is full, where should I park?

Use lot D located between McGrath Library and the maintenance building if all other lots are full.
  • Do I have to register my vehicle again if I registered it last year?

No.  Only new Hilbert students, faculty, and staff must register their vehicles upon arrival. Notify Campus Safety if vehicle information changes.
