HAMBURG, NY — Bring your furry friend for a blessing from our priest! Or bring nothing and leave with a new one. Hilbert College and Sweet Buffalo to the Rescue are hosting Fall in Love with Rescues, a free pet adoption event open to the public on Saturday, October 3rd, from 12 to 4 pm on the Hilbert quad.
Hilbert is partnering with Sweet Buffalo, a Western New York social media community that helps shelter and rescue animals find homes, to reach local rescues and bring adoptable pets to campus.
“We’re a Francsican college, and that means we look out for the ones who can’t ask for help. Every animal in a shelter is waiting on somebody, said Hilbert College Interim president Michael Cornell. “We want to help them find that somebody. At Hilbert, this is how we show up, whether that be for our students, our faculty, or our animals in the community.”
For Hilbert, this tradition is especially meaningful. Founded in 1957 by the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph, Hilbert carries with it a Franciscan tradition of caring for all of creation. As part of the celebration, a priest will offer a special blessing for the animals at 2 pm, and St. Francis medals will be available as a reminder of his deep love and care for all of God’s creatures.
Come for the animals. Stay for the food trucks, vendors, and DJ. It’s all part of Fran week, Hilbert’s celebration of its Franciscan roots.
