Study Abroad FAQ

Answers to frequently asked questions about the study abroad program at Hilbert College:

  1. Where can I study abroad?
Hilbert has many opportunities available in several countries. You may choose from programs in Australia, England, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Scotland, Spain, and Wales.

  2. What can I study abroad?
You can study a variety of fields, although not every major is available at every study site. See our Areas of Study section for options in your major or ones that will complement your studies at Hilbert.

  3. Will classes be in English?
All our partnership programs are in English.

  4. Will I still receive financial aid?
Yes. If you receive financial aid now you will receive the same aid when you go abroad. If you currently do not qualify for financial aid you may qualify while studying abroad because of the cost of the program. More information is available by contacting the academic dean or student finance.

  5. What are the requirements to study abroad?
Hilbert's program is open to upperclassmen with at least a 3.0 GPA.

  6. How long can I study abroad?
There are three program lengths from which to choose. You can study abroad for one semester, a full year or as part of a summer program.

  7. Where will I live?
Options vary by program. Typically students choose between on- or off-campus student housing, homestays with host families, or shared apartments or houses.

  8. Are internships abroad available?
Yes. In cooperation with host universities, some internships for Hilbert students are available. For more information, contact the academic dean or call 649-7900, ext. 242.

  9. Will my credits transfer?
All credits taken overseas are transferable with approval of your department chair prior to your departure to study abroad.

  10. What if classes in my major are not offered?
There are classes in a variety of subject areas. It may seem reasonable to match up classes with your major, but the best experience may be to take classes outside your major. It's a great learning experience, helps you appreciate cultural differences more, and can complement your main field of study.

  11. How can I find out if I need vaccinations or medication before going abroad?
Check with your primary care physician or The Centers for Disease Control for what is required before going abroad. If you need medication, you must either bring a sufficient amount for the duration of your trip abroad, or bring a prescription identifying the medication by its generic name to have it filled while abroad.

  12. Do I need special health insurance?
You must have health insurance to study abroad. Be sure you will be covered by health insurance when abroad, which can be verified with your insurance provider. Also, through Hilbert's partnership with Arcadia University to offer our study abroad program, a health and accident insurance plan for participating students is available. Stop by the academic dean's office located on the second floor of Franciscan Hall for more information, or call 649-7900, ext. 242.

  13. How do I obtain a visa?
A visa can be attained from foreign consulates in the U.S. or other countries.

  14. Isn't it dangerous for Americans to go abroad?
It's always important to be careful and every precaution is taken to ensure your safety. Hilbert carefully monitors the U.S. Department of State travel warnings and other public announcements. Information on travel warnings may also be found online. We do not send students anywhere where one's personal safety may be at risk. You will also receive basic safety information before going abroad and will be provided a contact person in case of an emergency.
