HAMBURG , N.Y. – The entertaining “Hypnotic Intoxication” program, which infuses alcohol education with a hypnosis presentation on the powerful affects of drinking, will be one of numerous activities at Hilbert College for National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week.
Hilbert is joining college students at more than 3,000 campuses across the country in the annual weeklong awareness campaign on alcohol abuse and healthy lifestyles, an effort endorsed by the Inter-Association Task Force on Alcohol and Other Substance Abuse Issues.
The week will kick-off with an alcohol-free tailgate party at 10 a.m. Oct. 16 at Ralph Wilson Stadium for the Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets game. The day will end with an interfaith service at 7 p.m. in St. Clare Chapel in Bogel Hall.
Red and white balloons, symbolizing a commitment to fight the illegal use of drugs, will be released at noon Oct. 17 in the campus quad.
Prior to the balloon release, free fried dough and cider will be served to the campus community from 9-11 a.m. at various campus locations.
A dodge ball tournament will be held Oct. 18 following the 7 p.m. Hilbert Hawks women’s volleyball game in the Hafner Recreation Center. A bonfire at 9 p.m. will close out the night in the campus quad.
Oct. 19 afternoon activities will include a hoop shoot from noon-1 p.m. in the campus quad, and a hands-on fall craft fair from 12:30-3 p.m. in the Campus Center Dining Hall.
The evening will feature relay races on an inflatable course from 6-9 p.m. in the campus quad. This will be followed by an alcohol-free casino night from 9-11 p.m. in the dining hall.
Participants will test their skills on a zany obstacle course while using ski/snowboarding equipment and drunk driving goggles at 3 p.m. Oct. 20 in the campus quad.
Keith Karkut’s two-part “Hypnotic Intoxication” show will first explore the impact of alcohol on everyday life at 9 p.m. in the dining hall. The second segment will have student volunteers hypnotized and invited to drink as much “potent alcohol,” which will actually be water, as they desire at a perceived party. The audience will see the apparent affects excessive drinking can have on individuals.
Also during the week, red ribbons in tribute to living drug-free lives will be distributed, as well as information handed out on alcohol and drinking and driving facts. In addition, alcohol awareness resources will on display at the Hilbert McGrath Library.
Alcohol Awareness Week activities are planned by the Hilbert Counseling Center in cooperation with various campus offices and organizations. All events are free and open to the public.
