BUFFALO, NY – Hilbert College held off D’Youville College 7-6 before cruising to a 12-2 win in the nightcap at Dunn Tire Park on a dry Wednesday afternoon in downtown Buffalo. With the doubleheader win, the baseball Hawks improve to 5-14 overall while their cross town rivals drop to 2-9 on the year.
Hilbert pitcher Erik Seeger (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) (1-3) earned his first win of the season while allowing three hits and three walks in five innings of work. The second-year lefty struck-out three while allowing just one run as the home team took game one. The Hawks were forced to come from behind throughout the contest before Dave Cunningham’s (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) run in the bottom of the seventh sealed the win. Hilbert’s Josh Cahall (Ripley, OH/Ripley) just missed hitting for the cycle as he pounded out a single, double, and triple while scoring two runs and adding two RBIs. Teammate Andy Mancini (Mt. Morris, NY/Mt. Morris) added a double, two RBIs and also scored a run for the winners. Dave Pelkey went the distance on the mound and suffered the loss for the Spartans.
In game two, the Hawks broke a 1-1 tie with a five-run second inning before scoring two in the fourth and four in the sixth to support winning pitcher Matt Schoepflin (Chaffee, NY/Holland). The senior right-hander went all seven innings while fanning four Spartans en route to evening his record at 1-1. Cahall continued his strong play with a four-for-four performance at the plate while adding a double, scoring two runs, and picking up an RBI. James Corsaro (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) was also perfect on offense with three singles, and Kevin Murphy (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon) was three-for-four with a pair of RBIs. D’Youville’s Kevin Buffham was charged with the loss.
Hilbert returns to conference play with a trip to the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg (9-11, 5-7) this Saturday.
