
HAMBURG, NY – The Hilbert College women’s volleyball team broke a six-game losing streak and pulled off an exciting 3-2 come from behind win over conference rival Medaille College (5-19, 0-8). Down two games to zero, the host Hawks rallied for wins’ of 30-24 and 30-21 to force a deciding game five, before outscoring the Mavericks 15-12 Wednesday night.
Kristy Gonciarz (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) and Destyn Brown (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) combined for 14 of the Hawks 26 kills, and Melissa Kick (Blasdell, NY/Mt. Mercy) added 22 assists and 15 digs to pace the winners. Laura Stranc (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) added a team high 35 digs to lead the defense that also got a five-kill, three-block, two-ace performance from Carole Jones (Bliss, NY/Letchworth).
“We got off to a bit of a rough start, but after the girls started communicating we were a completely different team,” said Hilbert coach Mary Boller-Easterbrook. “This was a good win for our program”.
At 9-14 overall, the Hawks have produced the most wins in the program’s history since a 13-15 campaign during their second year as an NCAA Division III program back in 1993.
Just 1-7 in league play, the Hawks will miss out on the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) tournament and will conclude the 2007 season this Saturday at home. Buffalo State and AMCC opponent La Roche College and will join the Hawks for a tri-match at the Hafner Recreation Center starting at 11:00 am.
