HAMBURG, NY - On August 31, Julia Decker was introduced as the new women’s lacrosse head coach at Hilbert
College. Susan Viscomi, Director of Athletics, is pleased to welcome the college’s first full-time coach. The 2008 College of Brockport graduate will perform administrative support for the athletic department and will lead the 2011-12 club lacrosse team into its first year of full-varsity status during the 2012-13 academic year. Decker will draw from her coaching experiences as much as she will pull from her playing days as a Golden Eagle to lead the Hawks into Division III competition.
As a stand-out lacrosse player at the College at Brockport, Decker propelled her team to new heights her final two seasons at the Rochester suburban school. Upon graduation, the senior captain ranked 2nd in points (204) and 3rd in goals (141) on the college’s all time lists. Her 2007 and 2008 teams were East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC) finalists (2008 champions). She was named as her team’s Offensive Player of the Year Award winner (2009) while grabbing a SUNYAC All-Conference Attacker Award in 2008. Decker also earned SUNYAC All-Academic Team (2008, 2009) recognition as well as SUNYAC Commissioner’s Academic List nod in 2008.
Since the fall of 2009, Decker served as an assistant lacrosse coach at the State University of New York at Geneseo, helping to guide the Blue Knights to back-to-back semi-final games in the SUNY Athletic Conference (2010, 2011). Besides in-game coaching and practice planning, her other primary duties involved on-campus recruiting, scouting reports, and video breakdown.
During her second year at Geneseo, Decker expanded her coaching background and assisted the field hockey program; while mirroring her lacrosse duties, she focused more on goalie-play increasing her overall knowledge and teaching skills for that position on the field.
When not coaching, Decker served as a substitute physical education teacher at York, Pavilion and Penn Yan School districts. The Penn Yan, NY native has worked as a lacrosse camp director, as well as a clinic staff member since 2005. For three summers in a row, Decker served as a P.J. Boatwright Jr. Intern for the Rochester District Golf Association organizing and running Junior golf tournaments for children in addition to assisting with the men’s tournaments.
Decker is pursuing her masters of science in physical education – athletic administration with an anticipated 2012 graduation date from the College of Brockport.
