HAMBURG, NY – The Hilbert College baseball team split their non-conference games with Cazenovia April 3. Chris Parrott hit his first collegiate home run in the 7-6 loss, while Pat Lagueras whacked a triple in the night cap to help propel the Hawks to a 3-1 victory. Freshman Curt Macysyn finished the day going three for five at the plate (1 RBI), and was credited with one steal and one run. Lagueras led with three RBIs during the double header. Hilbert improved to 5-14 and they dropped Cazenovia to 8-10.
In the early game, the Hawks got on the score board first after Lagueras hit a single 2 RBI hit in the bottom of the first inning. Cazenovia responded with three runs over the course of the next three innings giving them a 3-2 lead at the middle of the 4th. Parrott hit his solo home run just before Macysyn’s single drove home Ryan Ilardi to give the Hawks the lead back. The Wildcats tallied a run in the6th and then used a 3RBI home run by Jamie Barr in the 7th to grab back the lead, 7-4. Hilbert rallied in the bottom of the 7th. With two outs, Chris Hoak hit a double which sent Joe Pernick to third base. John Babocsi’s single was hit far enough to give both Pernick and Hoak time to sprint home but the game ended with Cazenovia’s center fielder making a routine catch in the outfield.
Babocsi and Hoak each finished with 2 RBIs and Joe Pernick and Macysyn each went 2 for 3 at the plate. Derek Mort took the loss after pitching 5.1 innings with one strike out.
The night cap started as a scoreless game until the top of the 3rd when Adam Wiley earned the Wildcats only RBI. Hilbert went two more innings without earning a run until the bottom of the 5th when they put three runs on the board and had five hits. Babocsi opened up with a double just prior to Lagueras’ triple tying the score, 1-1. Frank Mancuso earned an RBI when he singled up the middle which drove Lagueras home; Macysyn was then successful on his bunt to get to first base as well as advance runners on the bags. After stealing second base, Macysyn sprinted home off Matt Militello’s base hit. Hilbert took a 3-1 lead and then played solid defense the next two innings to end the game with a win.
Hoak pitched a complete game, giving up three hits, but struck out three batters. Lagueras, besides hitting his triple and celebrating his birthday today, got his pants dirty when he caught a foul ball along third base to make it a quick three up, three down 6th inning on defense.
Hilbert gets back into league play Saturday when they host La Roche College April 7th. The double header begins at 1pm.
