HAMBURG, NY – After battling through three lead changes and four ties, St. John Fisher’s long distance shooting inched them away from Hilbert College in the third game of the Hilbert Tip-Off Classic November 17. Jason Norsen, the Classic’s Most Valuable Player, muscled in 14 points in the paint, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked four shots to lead a trio of double figure scorers from St. John Fisher. Hilbert’s Dan McFarland reached for 13 points as the only Hawk to break out of the single digit scoring. St. John Fisher finished the Classic undefeated while Hilbert split their games with a victory over Fredonia in the opening day of the Classic.
At 13:56, Adam Ambielli’s three point bucket gave the Cardinals their first lead which they did not relinquish the rest of the way. As the Hawks were scoring inside the arc, Fisher was hitting from long distance by running their transition lanes and kicking to the perimeter off penetration or ball reversal. With a 37-23 half time score, Hilbert fought through a shooting slump, making nine of thirty attempts (1-7 from three) and defending a fifty-percent shooting team who was hot beyond the painted line (6-9).
Statistically, Hilbert won the battle of the boards (36-32) and couldn’t be stopped on the offensive glass grabbing 15. The Hawks committed few turnovers and secured more steals than Fisher. But the visiting team displayed confidence in their shooting as the game progressed, finishing with 51.1 percent.
Jerame Owens led the Hawks with nine rebounds and Trevor Stark used his quickness for game-high four steals. Thad Wier opened the three-point charge for St. John Fisher in the first half as he finished with 14 points and Chaz Lott gave another solid performance with 10 points, five assists, and two steals.
The six players who were named to the All Classic Team were junior Tyrone Clark and senior Amir Billups from Fredonia, senior Dan McFarland and freshman Jerame Owens from Hilbert and junior Thad Wier and MVP senior Jason Norsen from St. John Fisher College.
Hilbert (1-1) hosts Cazenovia College November 20th with an 8pm tip after the women’s double header at 6. Both games will be streamed live via ustream.tv.
