LA PLUME, PA – Natalie Whitman earned her fourth double-double scoring 21 points and grabbing 15 rebounds but the Hilbert College women’s basketball team suffered a 78-56 non-conference road loss to Keystone College (6-2) December 12. Jenah Labuski and Courtney Coots each chipped in 10 points for the 3-7 Hawks. Tiana Cuttino and Alyssa Cuomo’s hot shooting led the Giants to victory with their combined 12 for 21 from the floor and seven for eleven from long distance.
The Hawks took an 11-0 lead less than five minutes into the game with Coots netting a quick six points. But three consecutive Hilbert turn-overs gave Keystone the momentum and they went on a 17-7 run to tie the game at 9:52. A run by the Giants followed by a Hilbert run closed the half at 45-38 in favor of the host team.
Both teams were close in field goal percentage (40.5 vs. 39.5 for Hilbert) but Keystone shot five for ten from long distance and forced 14 Hilbert first half turnovers.
In the start the second half, and at a point where Hilbert needed to execute on offense, they gave the game away with unforced turnovers. Keystone was able to build their lead back to double digits and held that spread the rest of the game.
The Hawks earned five more second-chance points than Keystone and scored 32 points in the paint. But Hilbert gave up 29 points off their 36 turnovers and were outscored 42-7 in bench scoring.
Cuttino finished with 19 points and Cuomo netted 16 for Keystone.
Hilbert closes out their fall semester with a home game against SUNYAC Fredonia (6-3) on December 14 with a 7 pm tip.
