HAMBURG, NY – Becky Bard’s 20 points led the visiting Mount Aloysius Mounties (8-6) to a 70-46 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory over Hilbert College in women’s basketball February 2. Freshman Lauren Eggleston’s10 points and six rebounds led a balanced Hawk attack in defeat.
Aloysius took an early 11-2 lead before the Hawks cut the difference to six (18-12) by 8:00. Each team traded baskets the rest of the half with the Mounties hitting 3’s while Hilbert scored from inside the arc. Hilbert out-rebounded the Mounties (30-23) with 11 offensive boards but Mount Aloysius made five 3-point shots and converted five of six shots at the charity stripe to take a 32-20 half time lead. Bard led all scorers with 14 points making five of her eight attempts. Jenah Labuski’s six points and six rebounds led the Hawks who shot 25.8% from the floor.
Amber Grosch netted a lay up on the Hawks first possession in the second half cutting the difference to ten. The Mounties were active without the ball early in the second half scoring several times off give and go cuts. They produced a 15-4 run which stretched the difference to 21 points. Eggleston’s hustle for loose balls, offensive rebounds and ball distribution gave the Hawks some life cutting the score to 14 points at 10:38. The Mounties finished the game hitting 3’s or making shots from the charity stripe due to Hilbert fouls.
Teddi Burkett scored all her 11 points in the second 20-minute period as the visitor’s other double-figure scorer. Labuski and Natalie Whitman each netted 8 points and Grosch and Sarah Lorusso produced six points for Hilbert.
Mount Aloysius, the AMCC league leader in free throw percentage, sank 21 of 23 attempts and finished with 7 shots behind the arc. In contrast, the Hawks were 9 for 25 at the foul line and made only one 3-point shot. Hilbert’s hustle earned them the rebounding title as they secured 55 boards (21 offensive) to Mount Aloysius’ 49.
Hilbert returns to action this week when they host Pitt-Bradford on Wednesday, February 6 with a 6pm tip.
