BUFFALO, NY - Hilbert College lost two heart-breaking baseball games against Medaille College April 14 at McCarthy Park. With Hilbert holding the lead heading into the final innings, Medaille rallied in the bottom half to claim two, one-run victories over the Hawks.
Senior Chris Hoak and freshman Paul Wujek each connected for 3 hits on the day and freshman Tom Irish sent both runs home in the opening 3-2 loss.
Tony Mara {photo} went 6.2 innings with 6 strike outs before Garrett Pauly took the mound in the bottom of the first game. After a brief break, Pauly carried the Hawks through 6 full innings before Hoak finished the game.
On a cool and breezy afternoon, Medaille grabbed the first run of the day in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Hilbert inched back in the top of the 4th. With two quick outs, Paul Mistretta and John Babocsi earned base-on-balls then traveled around the bags on throwing errors and passed balls before Irish’s single sent the boys home. Medaille’s Serba hit a double to win the opening AMCC contest.
Hoak singled in the first inning to send Cody Ashford home giving Hilbert a 1-0 advantage after three batters. The Mavericks responded at the bottom of the second to knot the score. After one-scoreless inning, both Hilbert and Medaille added runs to their coffers. With Hilbert loading the bases in the 4th inning, Medaille walked back-to-back hitters, pushing the Hawks to a 3-1 lead. The Mavericks tallied a run in the 4th and 6th, which made for an interesting final inning of play.
Wujek hit a single to start, but the next three batters all flew out to end the inning. After giving up a quick double to open the bottom half, Hoak stepped to the mound and covered a sac bunt to get the runner out at first. The next batter earned a single, RBI to end the game.
Pitt-Bradford is scheduled to travel to Hamburg on Tuesday, April 16, for what might be the Hawks home opener. The Hawks have to reschedule the Penn State Altoona game which was rained out over the weekend.
