Game One Box Game Two Box
HAMBURG, NY – Freshmen Tyler Shaw and Paul Wujek {photo} came through in the clutch for Hilbert College as the Hawks came from behind to capture their second AMCC game of the season April 21. Hilbert dropped the opening game 7-5 before they rallied for the 7-6 eighth inning victory against Penn State Altoona (12-21, 6-8).
In the second game, Shaw forced a 6-6 tie when his sacrifice fly sent Chris Hoak trotting home after tagging back up on third in the bottom of the seventh inning. Garrett Pauly, who spelled Chris Hoak in the sixth, finished his second inning of hit-less ball in the top of the seventh which set up the excitement in the bottom half of the inning. Hilbert went four batters deep to pull out the win, when Wujek’s walk-off single up the middle pushed Pauly home for the game-winning run.
Hoak struck out four going 5.2 innings on the mound before Pauly took over and got the win.
Wujek finished with 3 hits and 2 RBIs while Hoak led with 3 hits as well. Both junior Joe Pernick and freshman Cody Ashford earned doubles in the am match-up.
In the first game, Altoona jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Hilbert responded in the bottom of the third with two runs. Aggressive base running by Ashford and Justin Hulbert allowed Hulbert to steal home and Ashford to cross the plate off a Hawks ground out to third base.
Mount Aloysius extended their one run lead to three by the end of the game to secure the opening victory.
Freshman Tyler Roth went 5 innings before two other rookies took the mound (Matt Goraj and Tony Mara). Pauly finished the game facing two batters in the top of the seventh. Pernick and Justin Hulbert earned 3 hits and 1 RBI each with Hulbert’s double occurring in the sixth.
Hilbert (2-24, 2-12) is scheduled to host D’Youville College on Tuesday, April 23, one day earlier than originally scheduled.
