Hamburg, NY - The Hilbert women’s soccer team lost a tight game to Hiram College, 3-0 today after playing a close first period. Hiram scored two goals late in the second half which took any comeback chances away from the Hawks (1-4).
Freshman goalie,
Erin Smith was challenged with a number of early Hiram attacks but closed the door to keep the game scoreless by half time. At the other end of the field,
Sarah Schmidt created several open looks for the Hawks which were either turned away or just wide of the cage. Hiram held a 9 to 5 advantage in shots by half time.
The second half started similarly to the way the first forty five were played. The 0-0 tie was broken in the 60th minute when Hiram’s Ernestina Zappa squeaked through the Hawk’s defense and beat Smith on the break. Hiram struck again when Stephanie Takeuchi scored off a penalty kick in the 83rd minute of the game. The Terriers extended their lead when Breann Mason scored off a re-start kick which deflected off the defensive wall and into the net, with less than five minutes remaining in the match.
Despite strong efforts from Hilbert in the closing minutes Hiram closed out the victory.
Hilbert’s next match is September 16 at 12pm against Penn State Beaver.
