HAMBURG, NY – Jenah Labuski’s eight foot jump shot with 00:05 remaining gave Hilbert College a 65-63 victory over Cazenovia in women’s basketball November 20. Natalie Whitman notched her second consecutive double/double with 21 points and 21 rebounds. Cazenovia’s Kimberly Virgian took game high scoring honors with 23 followed closely by teammate Megan McDermott’s 22. Whitman dominated the offensive glass cleaning it for 12 caroms bring her game’s total to 21. The Hawks improve to 2-1 just before their mini-Thanksgiving break and they prevented the Wildcats from picking up their first win of the season after four tries.
In a poor first-half shooting performance for both teams, Cazenovia took a 33-31 lead into the locker room. Hilbert came back with a vengeance and opened with a 12-0 run capped off by a Courtney Coots lay-up at 16:06. The Wildcats stormed back making three successive 3-pt shots and one free throw to cut the difference to two. Hilbert extended their lead back to seven on two occasions but Cazenovia’s good foul shooting (7-9) in the last 3:30 created a 63-63 tie. Hilbert called a time out with 00:14 seconds remaining and after a missed Hilbert jump shot, Whitman’s offensive rebound with a kick to Labuski earned the win.
Labuski {in photo to right} finished with 12 points and nine rebounds and Sarah Lorusso finished with eight points, six rebounds and two assists for Hilbert.
Haley Zambito reached for 10 points for Cazenovia who shot 24.6% for the game. Hilbert out-rebounded the Wildcats 63-46 and completed the game shooting 30.7% from the floor.
Hilbert travels to Alfred University November 24th with a 2pm non-conference match-up.
