STEUBENVILLE, OH – After their comeback rally fell short, the Hilbert College women’s basketball team suffered their second straight Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference loss in a week. Franciscan University won the December 1st game (53-43) at the foul line improving to 2-0 in league play. Jessica Jamison’s overall play led the Hawks (2-4) who dropped to 0-2 in AMCC.
Jamison finished with 14 points shooting six for fourteen from the field. She grabbed four offensive rebounds as she and point guard Sarah Lorusso each ended with six rebounds apiece. Natalie Whitman chipped in an even 10 points and three assists. Lorusso dished for game-high five assists.
Amy O’Keefe led Franciscan with 15 points and was followed by Lacey Huck’s 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Both teams traded baskets early in the game before Franciscan went on a 13-1 run to take a 23-7 lead with 3:57 remaining in the first half. Jenah Labuski finished the half with one block, one steal and a made basket but the Hawks still found themselves down by 12 points by the break.
The second half played out like the first period with both teams matching points until Hilbert went on their own mini-run beginning at 6:20. Courtney Coots {in photo to right} made two three-point baskets and was two for two from the charity stripe to cut the deficit to six points, 45-39, with 3:39 remaining. The Hawks finished the game sending the Barons to the foul line 16 times and watched the home team’s lead balloon again with all the free shots. Hilbert made only two of their last eight field goal attempts in the game’s final minutes.
The Barons held the field goal percentage advantage (34.9 vs. 27.9) and went to the foul line twenty-two more times than the Hawks (35 vs. 13). Hilbert secured 14 offensive rebounds to win the battle of the boards (33 vs. 32).
The Hawks will travel to North Buffalo December 5th when they take on Medaille College (3-2, 1-0) at 6pm in the Sullivan Center.
