BUFFALO, NY – The men’s volleyball team got back on the winning track today grabbing an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win from Penn State Altoona before the Hawks suffered a league loss to Medaille College, who served as host of the tri-match.
Hilbert improved to 4-11 overall while Altoona dropped to 3-13 having suffered a 3-set loss in the opening game to the 13th ranked Mavericks (9-6).
Hilbert worked fast in the first match, taking a 25-14,25-16 and 25-22 victory over the Lions, who earlier this season beat the Hawks in Hamburg. Adam Weaver dominated the net hitting 17 kills with only 2 errors. Providing key support offensively was Fred Sickau who finished with 10 kills (.350) and 2 solo blocks. David Mellerski had 33 assists while Scott Ross and Weaver were each credited with 3 service aces. Korey Schwab led with 9 digs and Ryan Ratajczak added 7. Hilbert earned 40 kills, 7 aces and 5 blocks.
Medaille controlled the pace of the match earning 25-16,25-18 and 25-17 set scores as they maintained their national rankings in Division III volleyball. Weaver was Mellerski’s primary target at the net, securing 27 assists on the Outside Hitter’s 14 kills. Weaver also stole 3 more service aces from the Mavericks and Sickau snuck 2 aces in as well while Anthony Blasz carried the defense with 7 digs.
At the time of the article, Weaver leads the United Volleyball Conference in Kills (206) and Kills Per Set (4.38) as well as Service Aces (25). Ryan Ratajczak holds down the 2nd slot in Digs (144) and Digs Per Set (3.06).
The Hawks return to action Wednesday when they host Elmira College (9-8) who is currently ranked #11 in Division III men’s volleyball.
