HAMBURG, NY – The Hilbert College men’s volleyball team had chances to grab the lead in each set, but the #11th ranked Soaring Eagles from Elmira held on to secure a 3-set United Volleyball Conference win February 27. Elmira improved to 4-3 in United Volleyball Conference as Hilbert hangs on to a 1-6 league record.
In a 25-20 first set, play was fast and Elmira out-paced the Hawks with 13 kills. The second set found Hilbert not hitting well as they ended with only 4 kills and 6 hitting errors in a 25-17 tab. The final set was any body’s game with Hilbert closing the gap from 20-15 to 22-20. Elmira finished that set with three kills (25-22) to improve to 10-8 overall. The Hawks were given free points by the Soaring Eagles who were docked with 16 service errors in the match.
Scott Ross hit well collecting 6 kills and no hitting errors in 13 attempts. Adam Weaver finished with 9 kills and 12 digs, while David Mellerski tossed 18 assists and added 12 digs. Ryan Ratajczakbattled to 10 digs.
Elmira had a balanced attack with five different players hitting five or more kills. Evan Clarke had 19 digs and Michael Vellutato added 30 assists.
The Hawks have a few days off from competition before they travel to Juniata College to face the #2 nationally ranked Juniata and the #12 ranked Stevenson on March 2nd.
