PITTSBURGH, PA –Hilbert College faced a red-hot La Roche College baseball team April 6 and suffered two road losses to the undefeated AMCC opponent. The RedHawks improved to 4-0 AMCC (17-4) after their 8-1, 8-0 sweep over Hilbert.
Junior Joe Pernick {in photo} finished the day with 3 hits and freshman Paul Wujec added 3 stolen bases to his 2 hits as the Hawks drop to 1-17 and 1-5 AMCC.
In the 1pm game, Wujek knotted the game when he stole home in the middle of the 4th. La Roche ended that inning by putting one more run on the board to make it a 2-1 game.
Neither team mustered any runs until La Roche went on a 6th inning tear to rip the game open late. Tony Mara struck out the first batter and forced a long out to centerfield to give hope to the Hawks for an upset. The next batter hit a triple, which started a scoring run that finally ended with the same batter flying out to center field for the second time in the inning.
Pernick led with two hits.
After a brief break, Hilbert played to a scoreless top half before the RedHawks opened with a triple which kept their offensive-grove going. La Roche padded their lead in the 2nd and 5th innings and defensively prevented the Hawks from crossing home.
Cody Ashford, Wujek, Pernick,Tom Irish and Justin Hulbert earned hits while Wujek (two) and Ashford were credited with stolen bases. Colby Parachoniak took the loss on the mound before Tyler Roth picked up the middle three innings of service earning three strike outs.
The Hawks travel to North Buffalo for their next AMCC game against Medaille College. The 1pm double header will be played at McCarthy Park April 10th.
