HAMBURG, NY – Thiel College prevailed with a 3-0 victory over Hilbert College on a night the Hawks celebrated their graduating senior athletes. There was a very supportive and encouraging crowd in Hafner to support the men’s volleyball team in their last game of the season.
Scott Ross led with 7 kills (.267) and Fred Sickau followed right behind with 6 kills. Anthony Blasz added one service ace to his 4 kills and 4 digs while Adam Clabo chipped in one kill and one dig. Ending his career with season high stats was Ryan Tofil who bumped his career totals with 2 kills, and one dig, one solo block, and one assisted block.
The sophomore class contributed their part, with Ryan Ratajczak adding 11 digs which keeps him in the top four spots in the national Division III rankings. David Mellerski continued to pace the offense with 22 assists and Andrew Duncan played in impressive match with 2 kills and one assisted block. Stephen Phillips, playing in his second game back from a season long injury, passed for one assist but had many touches on the ball. Korey Schwab added 3 kills and 5 digs to represent the freshman class tonight. Missing from the line-up was junior Adam Weaver, who has missed the last few games because of lingering concussed symptoms. Weaver currently ranks #1 in Division III national stats with 4.32 kills per set.
Thiel College took an early lead in the first set to cruise to a 25-10 victory. The Hawks pulled together for a 25-18 loss in the middle set before they really challenged the Tomcats in the third as both teams traded leads for most of the game. Hilbert dropped the final set, 25-21, and finished the season with a 6-21 overall record.
