HAMBURG, N.Y. – On Friday, January 26, 2018 Hilbert College students, faculty and staff will participate in Unity with Our Community, a service day devoted to carrying on the work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr in our community.
This day aims to connect Hilbert with members of our surrounding community and the work Dr. King advocated for to understand the impact and importance of taking action to promote equity, justice, respect, and compassion. As a way of living out the dream Dr. King dared to put forth into the world during his famous “I have a dream” speech, Hilbert College students, faculty, and staff will serve with members of the greater Buffalo Community.
Members of the Hilbert community will serve at six sites in the area including:
- Boys and Girls Club of Elma, Marilla and Wales: A cornerstone of the community since opening its doors in 1974, the organization provides a safe, structured and positive environment for approximately 1,000 youth after-school, during holidays and summer vacation.
- Food Bank of WNY: As the primary hunger-relief organization in Western New York, the agency obtains and distributes nutritious food and support to our community members throughout Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, and Niagara counties.
- Habitat Buffalo’s ReStore: A part of Habitat for Humanity, this socially conscious retail outlet, selling gently used furniture, household appliances, building materials, and home accessories. ReStore inventory changes daily, and items are sold at a fraction of retail price. Every purchase helps Habitat build homes for families in need and keeps thousands of items out of landfills.
- Little Portion Friary: A volunteer-run organization that brings forth the mission of the Catholic Church to provide food for the hungry, clothing for the undressed, and shelter for the homeless.
- Salvation Army of Buffalo: A non-profit organization that offers the community of Buffalo a variety of programs and services that provide for a better life for others in need. Services and programs include Emergency Shelter, Employment Services, Golden Age (Senior) Center, and Emergency Disaster Relief.
- The Teacher’s Desk: A store where teachers shop free for books, school supplies and teacher resources for students in their classrooms. Its mission is to distribute free school supplies to students in need, to encourage teachers and to provide purpose through volunteerism.
Depending upon the site, students, staff, and faculty will have opportunities to organize supplies and pantries, prep meals, assist with light housekeeping, and other general maintenance.
