4+1 Master of Education Program:
Hilbert College & Canisius University

Hilbert College, in partnership with Canisius University, is excited to offer an accelerated 4+1 pathway to a Master of Science in Education (MSEd) and New York State teaching certifications. This innovative program allows you to earn your bachelor's degree and master's in just five years, saving you time and resources.

4+1 Program Schedule

As an eligible English or Liberal Studies student, you'll begin taking six select Canisius undergraduate education courses during your freshmen/sophomore year, all while completing your Bachelor of Arts degree at Hilbert. You'll travel to Canisius for class (one class per semester) during your sophomore year for these courses.

Upon your undergraduate graduation, you'll seamlessly transition to Canisius to complete your master's degree in Adolescent Education (grades 7-12) and Special Education (grades K-12), earning your New York State certifications. Your master's level classes will be held both on-campus and online, offering flexibility. Upon completion of the program, if you're an English major, you'll be qualified to teach English. If you're a Liberal Studies major, you'll be qualified to teach Social Studies.

Benefits of the 4+1 MSEd Program

  • Become immersed in field experiences through your classes, and placement will be done for you.
  • Complete your master's degree and certifications in approximately one year, instead of the traditional two.
  • Take Canisius University courses during your freshmen/sophomore year at Hilbert, ensuring a smooth transition to graduate studies.
  • Earn New York State certifications in Adolescent Education and Special Education.
  • Benefit from small class sizes and individualized support from faculty at both Hilbert and Canisius.

Eligibility Requirements

If you're an English or Liberal Studies major at Hilbert, you're eligible for this exciting program! To qualify, you'll need to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75 in your relevant coursework, and you must complete 15 credits here at Hilbert before you begin taking classes at Canisius.

How to Apply

  1. Meet with your advisor to discuss your interest in the 4+1 program with your academic advisor at Hilbert during your first year.
  2. Confirm you meet the program's eligibility requirements.
  3. Submit your application to the MSEd program at Canisius University by the February 1 deadline of your junior year.
  4. Provide your official transcript and letter of recommendation.

Tuition and Financial Aid

  • During your undergraduate years, you will pay Hilbert College tuition and cross-register for Canisius courses.
  • Upon entering the graduate program at Canisius University, you will pay Canisius graduate tuition.
  • Students seeking financial aid will follow the application procedures of the respective institutions.

Shortages

New York State is grappling with a significant teacher shortage. Key areas of need include special education, STEM fields, and language instruction. This shortage is exacerbated by a 53% drop in teacher education program enrollment since 2009. Adding to the challenge, the NYS Teacher Retirement System predicts that one-third of current teachers may retire within five years. To address this, New York will require 180,000 new teachers over the next decade.
