Digital Campus Initiative

We recognize the financial strain our students go through, paying for tuition, books, laptops, while also juggling an education. At Hilbert, we are introducing our new Digital Campus Initiative, dedicated to keeping our students focused on their degrees while we handle the rest. Each full time Hilbert College undergraduate student taking classes on campus will have access to a laptop and improved wireless access across all parts of campus.

We don't just provide laptops - we also supply the required materials! Our Digital Campus Initiative includes an all-access course materials program that allows students to have all their materials by the first day of class. The cost is included in tuition and is eligible to be covered by financial aid so there will be no surprises about costs after enrollment.

NEW Wireless Upgrade & Expansion

With funding from the Digital Campus Initiative, we have begun the process of improving wireless capability on campus.  We continue to work on upgrading wireless across campus. We appreciate your patience during this project.

Frequently Asked Questions

General

Expand all Collapse all
  • How does the Digital Campus Initiative work?

The Digital Campus Initiative is an all-access course materials program that allows students to have all their materials by the first day of class. The cost is included in tuition and is eligible to be covered by financial aid so there will be no surprises about costs after enrollment. No more searching multiple sites and waiting for them to be delivered on time. The program allows students to focus on their education as opposed to figuring out how to find and pay for their learning materials.

  • Will I save money?

Yes! You will not pay out of pocket for your required course materials or laptop, as costs are covered in your tuition.

  • Will this program affect my financial aid?

No. This program is included as a part of your tuition and is eligible to be covered by financial aid.

Laptop

Expand all Collapse all
  • Can I opt-out of the laptop program?

Because the laptop program is part of the broader Digital Campus Initiative, students cannot opt out of paying the fee for the comprehensive fee. The goal of this initiative is to provide students with the technology necessary to meet their academic needs at Hilbert College. If a student already owns a device that will help to meet their needs, they do not have to accept their college-issued laptop.

If something should happen to the student’s personal machine, Hilbert IT can provide a temporary loaner laptop while repairs are being made.

  • What if I already have a laptop?

We understand there may be situations where students will already have a laptop for personal use. All Hilbert students will have access to a school-issued laptop, if they choose to use it. If students choose to use their personal laptop, Hilbert IT will have a large pool of loaner laptops available should something happen to the student’s personal computer during the academic year. Students will be able to sign out a loaner laptop for a temporary period or they could choose to use the loaner laptop for the remainder of their Hilbert academic career.
  • How and when will I get my laptop?

New and returning residential and commuter students will have the opportunity to pick up their laptop when they come to campus in the Fall. We are working to create a coordinated process where students will report to a classroom at a specific day and time to sign out their laptop and test to make sure they can successfully log in and connect to Hilbert’s wireless network. Students should expect to get notified in late July or early August with their pickup day and time. Please note, we are working with campus partners to understand when students will be reporting to campus to ensure all students have their laptop prior to the start of classes.
  • If I don’t use Hilbert’s laptop, what benefit do I get from this initiative?

Hilbert’s Digital Campus Initiative is aimed at providing necessary technology and security resources to all Hilbert students including laptops, electronic textbooks, improved and expanded Wi-Fi along with card access to all Hilbert buildings
  • What happens if the student needs repairs to their Hilbert laptop?

Hilbert IT Services should be able to resolve most issues with the Hilbert laptop. Should their laptop be considered defective or require more extensive repairs, Hilbert IT will work with a local repair shop to resolve those issues. Should the student experience issues with their laptop while away from campus during a break period, HP will provide ‘Pick up and Return’ support

Students are responsible for the cost of repairs for damage linked to careless or negligent use or loss. Students are responsible for the replacement of the laptop PC if it is lost or stolen. Hilbert College recommends checking with your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy for coverage in the event the laptop is lost or stolen

  • Who owns the Hilbert laptop?

The laptop is the property of Hilbert College.
  • Do I have to return the laptop when I leave?

If a student has successfully completed their academic program and has participated in the laptop initiative for more than 3 full academic years, they will have to opportunity to buy from Hilbert for a significantly reduced rate

Students that unexpectedly leave Hilbert College prior to degree completion are required to return the laptop. Students will have the opportunity to buy the laptop for a pro-rated dollar amount. Students that do not return their computer within 2 months of leaving the college will be responsible to pay a pro-rated amount for the balance of the computer.

Courses

Expand all Collapse all
  • How and when do I get my course materials (books and courseware)?

Once you have selected your courses, your course list will be sent to the campus store and they will get everything ready for you! If your instructor selected digital materials, a link will be available in each course’s site in our learning management system, Blackboard. If your instructor selected print rental materials, print books will be available for pickup on campus.

Required digital books and course materials will be available within Blackboard or online through BryteWave RedShelf about two weeks before the start of the semester. Required print books will be available for pickup on campus. Information will be sent to you about pickup locations, times, and log on information.

  • What if my schedule changes?

If your schedule changes, your book order will be updated accordingly. If you add or drop a class with digital materials, your access will be updated within 24 hours. If you add or drop a class with print materials, you will need to return any print books or other materials you will no longer need based on your updated schedule. Print books must be returned to avoid non-return fees. Information about due dates and locations will be sent to you if your schedule changes.

  • Are recommended course materials included?

No. Recommended or suggested course materials and supplies are not provided as a part of this program. These items can be purchased at the Hilbert College bookstore website or in-store.

  • If my professor has recommended course materials, will those be included in the program?

Only materials identified by your professor or campus as “required” are included as part of the program. All “recommended” materials will be available for purchase at the campus store and online at https://www.bkstr.com/hilbertstore/home.

  • What do I do after finals?

If your instructor selected required digital materials, they will be returned automatically at the conclusion of the course.

If your instructor selected required print rental materials, all books must be returned to the campus store when the term ends. Information will be sent to you about drop off locations and times.

  • I like keeping my books at the end of term; can I do that with this program?

After the term is complete, rented textbooks must be returned to the campus store and digital textbook access will end. However, you can contact the bookstore about the possibility of keeping your books at the beginning of the semester.

  • What is BryteWave?

Brytewave is a digital textbook platform. You can highlight text, bookmark, search, sort and take notes using Brytewave. You can access Brytewave through its website or through your course’s Blackboard site.

If you forgot your password or didn’t receive your password, go to https://Brytewave.redshelf.com, select the Log In button in the upper right. Select “forgot password” or navigate to this link https://brytewave.redshelf.com/accounts/forgot/ and use your school email address to reset your password.

  • What if I want to print my eBook?

You will be able to print parts of your eBook, but the publisher determines how much of the eBook can be printed.

  • What if I need audio books or other accessibility accommodations?

Please contact Accessibility Services at 716-926-8866 or see more at https://www.hilbert.edu/academics/student-services/disability-services.

  • What if I get an incomplete in a class and need additional access time to the course materials?

If a student earns an incomplete, the instructor will work with the bookstore and publisher to ensure access.

  • Can I access my course materials on my mobile device or tablet?

Most courses use digital books and courseware and can be accessed via apps. You can download Brytewave RedShelf app through your app store.
