PRE-MED
There are 169 medical schools in the nation, with a variety of admission criteria and application processes. Pre-Professional Advisors will ensure that pre-med students meet the prerequisite coursework set out by the Association of American Medical Colleges and by the student’s desired medical schools.
According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) the medical school/MCAT requirements are as follows:
- One year (two semesters) of general Biology.
- One year (two semesters) of general Chemistry.
- One year (two semesters) of general Physics.
- One year (two semesters) of Organic Chemistry.
In addition, most medical schools required the following:
- One semester of general Psychology.
- One semester of general Sociology.
- One semester of Biochemistry.
- One semester (each) of Calculus and Statistics.
- One year (two semesters) of English.
A typical program of study to meet the medical school prerequisite coursework would include the following sequence:
- Fall Year 1:
- EN 101 – College Writing
- BI 140 – College Biology I with Lab
- CH 140 – College Chemistry I with Lab
- PSY 101 or SO 101
- Spring Year 1:
- EN 102 – Writing in the Humanities
- BI 141 – College Biology II with Lab
- CH 140 – College Chemistry II with Lab
- Fall Year 2:
- CH 211 – Organic Chemistry I with Lab
- PSY 101 or SOC 101
- Spring Year 2:
- CH 211 – Organic Chemistry II with Lab
- Fall Year 3:
- BI 320 – Biochemistry with Lab
- MA 205 – Survey of Calculus (prerequisite: MA 146)
- PY 140 – College Physics I with Lab
- Spring Year 3:
- MA 200 – Topics in Statistics
- PY 141 – College Physics II with Lab
- Additional Course Recommendations:
- BI 300 – Genetics with Lab
- BI 340 – Molecular Biology with Lab
